On average studies made in three hospitals show that it takes a cleaning assistant 8 minutes to clean an ordinary standard radiator. That might seem like a small and rather insignificant number, but think about a hospital layout and let’s look at an example: Say this cleaning assistant has an area with 20 rooms and a hallway, each room with two radiators in them and 10 radiators in the hallway. Calculating with the average cleaning time of an ordinary radiator, it would take the cleaning assistant 6.67 hours to clean just the radiators in that area.

Expensive and inefficient cleaning

6.67 hours spent on cleaning radiators only - that’s definitely a significant number. Now take into account all the other surfaces to clean in each of those 20 rooms and think about the hours spent; and then think of the hourly wage of the cleaning assistant. This scenario is just for 1 cleaning assistant and 20 rooms. Most hospitals have a lot more capacity.

Even if we look only at the economy aspect of cleaning in healthcare institutions we get disappointing numbers, but the task of cleaning is not even the goal; better hygiene is. Conventional radiators are ridiculously difficult to clean thoroughly, and even after they have been cleaned they still harbour dangerous bacteria. And just to continue down the economy road: Those bacteria can lead to HAIs (Healthcare Associated Infections) which lead to sicker patients, which leads to beds being occupied for longer and beds lacking for new, incoming patients. By decreasing HAIs you save money on patient treatment and you get more space for the new patients coming in.

The solution is quite simple, though. Economy and hygiene go hand in hand, meaning if a radiator is easy to clean it will be more thoroughly cleaned, studies show. And if it’s easy to clean, it’s faster to clean, thus saving time and money.

Hygienic radiators – a new concept

An easy-to-clean radiator saves time and money for healthcare institutions. Making a hygienic radiator means minimizing the dirt deposits, allowing cleaning of the back of the radiator and having a flat front, no sharp corners and closed ends to ensure fast wiping.

Hudevad P5 Easy Clean was the first radiator in our healthcare range. The design is based on the trademark Hudevad P5 radiator, but it has been significantly optimized for easy cleaning.

Ph.D. in molecular biology, Pia Kiil Nielsen has conducted a study with  Hudevad P5 Easy Clean, showing that up to 50% cleaning time can be saved, compared to an ordinary radiator.

Pia Kiil Nielsen’s studies were conducted on several Danish hospitals over a period of 14 days to 6 months.

”On average, the Hudevad P5 Easy Clean takes 4 minutes to clean. Based on my research, it takes 8 minutes on average to clean an ordinary radiator, which means that the Hudevad P5 Easy Clean saves the cleaning staff 50% of the cleaning time spent on radiators.

”Assuming there are 20 rooms with each 2 radiators and 10 radiators in the hallway. If these are ordinary radiators, they will take the cleaning staff 6.67 hours to clean. If these radiators were replaced by Hudevad P5 Easy Clean radiators, they could be cleaned in 3.34 hours.”

Built-in radiators means ultimate hygiene

The Hudevad P5 Easy Clean was developed because there was a need for better heating solutions in hospitals and it works like a charm, fulfilling the requirements. However, even more hygienic radiators have been added to the Hudevad hygiene range since then. The Hudevad Mundum, for example, has no backside to clean as it is sealed against the wall. That means no cavities for dirt to accumulate and a whole panel less to clean.

The most hygienic radiator on the entire market, though, is Hudevad Lignum. Hudevad Lignum is built into the wall, leaving only a front plate to clean and no cavities or openings - it’s quite literally faster to clean than wiping a table.

Hospital budgets are as tight as they come, which is why it is important to save money where possible – and that can be done by investing in hygienic radiators. For example, here you can read about how quickly Hudevad Lignum reaches its return on investment (hint: it’s less than a year). The Hudevad P5 Easy Clean halves the cleaning time of a regular radiator from 8 to 4 minutes, while neither Hudevad Mundum nor Hudevad Lignum takes more than 2 minutes to clean. Those savings should be easy to spot.
